THE LOCAL FLEET
J22 Fleet 67, Corpus Christi, is small, but is backed by the very active
and
competitive Southwest District. Sixty-five different boats competed
in
circuit regattas in 2000, with 23 sailing four or more regattas.
The
response to having a World Championship in Corpus Christi has been
overwhelmingly positive throughout the Texas fleets, with offers to
help in
all the logistics of running this regatta.
The competition will undoubtedly be tough. Corpus Christi has
produced two
J22 World Champions: Mark Foster (1999) and Paul Foerster (1996).
Both of
these sailors were born and raised and learned to sail in Corpus Christi.
At the 1999 World Championships in Cleveland, four of the top five,
and
seven of the top ten boats were from Texas.
Every effort will be made to procure charter boats for the regatta.
If no
US builder is producing boats by then, our port is ready to accept
container shipped boats for charter and subsequent sale.
